Which Language Did Jesus Speak – Aramaic or Hebrew?
As an English/Hebrew translator, I often discover that people do not know what Hebrew is. Recently I was at a police station for an official stamp when the policeman looked suspiciously at my document, and asked me what language it was in. When he heard “Hebrew” he was surprised and asked –“but who speaks Hebrew?”
I told him that God spoke Hebrew. It is known that The Old Testament of the Bible was originally in Hebrew. However, some words in the Greek translation of the New Testament are in Aramaic, so what was the original? I wanted to find out what was the language of Jesus.
The Encyclopaedia Britannica and other reputable sources support the assertion that Jesus spoke Aramaic. My own surname is in Aramaic.
There is however another school of thought about the language Jesus used.
