The crisis in Angola had a major impact upon Cold War Relations. Though the Angola crisis can be seen as a relatively small geopolitical event, its impact resonated throughout the cold war. For its impact to be seen the crisis must be split up into smaller time periods. From 1975 to approx 1980 the Angola crisis created tension between the 2 superpower rivals and thus led to the deterioration of the US soviet policy of détente. From the 1980s onwards, the crisis impacted on the cold war, with both the US and soviets using the events in Africa to justify their new hardline stance. The final years of the Angolan crisis served to highlight the nature of the cold war in the late 80s with the US and Soviets meeting for talks and agreements .The Angolan crisis impacted upon the cold war, not only creating tension but also by creating an avenue for the superpowers to communicate.
