... In the play Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett tells a story of two homeless men waiting for someone or something named Godot. The play is about how these two men, Vladimir and Estragon, pass the time while waiting. ... Whether it be the end of a bad day or when we finally receive what it is we have been waiting for we are all trying to keep ourselves entertained so we can survive until the end. ... I questioned that if there was a sequel would his desire to end his waiting overcome his desire to hold out for Godot and result in him killing himself. The other option and the one I favor would be that Vladimir would just continue to wait and the sequel would result in nothing happening three times. ... For example, Vladimir asks the boy who brings Godot’s message “Do you recognize us? ... If just one person could tell him that he really was there yesterday Vladimir would know he was not dreaming and that he really was to be waiting for Godot on that day and at that place.
Godot is the character in the play that never appears he is only represented by the boy that relays his messages to Vladimir and Estragon. “Godot exists entirely as a creature perceived in all earnestness by Vladimir and Estragon, and they clearly associate him with concrete images of authority and with less concrete but nonetheless provocative images suggesting divinity-as someone who can certainly do ‘something’ for them” (Graver 42). We are never introduced to Godot and all we concieve of him is gained through the actions and statements made towards him by Vladimir and Estragon. Considering that they are still trying to establish exactly whom Godot is and what the “something” is that he has to offer them, the audience’s perception of him is also left open to interpretation. Because of the lack of information about Godot, other struggles within Vladimir begin to arise. Vladimir ask they boy what Godot does, he wants to know why Godot keeps putting him off. Vladimir struggles with whether Godot is too busy to meet him or if he is just putting Vladimir off because he simply does not want to meet. Because, “Godot emerges as someone who appears to have considerable respectability and power in his community”(Graver 41) Vladimir and Estragon continue to wait for two days and more than likely will wait until the day Godot finally arrives.
