Merchant of venice

"Jessica is essentially an unsympathetic and unattractive character.” How far do you agree? Everyone has their fair share of admirable traits and misgivings. This, of course, does not exclude Jessica. Therefore, I agree to the statement above to a certain extent only. To say of a character, who demonstrates the power of love by abandoning her father and religion for Lorenzo, to be “unattractive” would be unbecoming. As a daughter of a usurer, Jessica probably receives much condemnation from others. However, though there is a saying that goes “ an apple never fall far from its tree”, it proves to be untrue in Jessica’s case. She claimed insistently that though she is “a daughter to his blood”, she is “not to his manners”. This is true in more ways than one as even an outsider, Salerio claims that “there is more difference between” Shylock and Jessica “than between jet and ivory”, more between their bloods than “red wine and Rhenish”. A resourceful and bold lass, Jessica was the one who thought of the plan to elope with Lorenzo and managed to deceive her father so that he does not have any doubts about her, even to the extent of entrusting her with the house keys. Ironically, Jessica also misused this trust when she disguised herself as a page and ran away with Lorenzo after stealing a casket of ducats and gold.
