The book that I chose to write about for this paper is Bless Me Ultima. ...
The one thing that I liked the most about this book was the way Anaya made the relationship between Antonio and Ultima. I thought it was neat how he made Antonio and Ultima almost on the same level, all the other characters treated her as a hierarchy.
The relationship between Antonio and Ultima is very different than the relationship between Ultima and any of the other characters. You first notice this when Ultima comes to live with Antonio and his family. When Ultima first walks in the door everyone in the family greets her as Grande, but Antonio calls her Ultima. When Antonio’s mother corrects him, Ultima corrects his mother and says that it is okay for Antonio to call her Ultima, and that she knew there was going to be something special about Antonio from the beginning when she delivered him.
I also find it a little bit strange that Ultima only has this relationship with Antonio and not any of the other children, considering that she delivered all of the children and should have special ties with them all.
Another thing that I noticed between Antonio and Ultima is that he has faith in her and he feels like he can confide in her. ... When he gets back home Ultima is up waiting for him because she knows that he was gone and she sent her owl to watch over him and guide him.
