Alfred Adler
Alfred Aldler's observation that "human beings live in the realm of meanings"
reflects the social view of human behavior. He said to understand a person, people
must look at the whole person, not at parts, isolated from one another. He was an early
feminist that believed that both men and women suffered from our society's
undervaluing of women and overvaluing of men. He believed that the only good
relationship between men and women was an equal one.
Adler had a psychology that was value oriented which saw human beings being
able to cooperate in living together and striving for self-improvement, self-fulfillment,
and contribution to society. He predicted that if we did not learn to cooperate we would
eventually risk killing each other. A major problem that humans have is living on this
earth together, appreciating what the past has contributed to the present, and making
the lives better for future generations.
After he viewed the human conditions, Adler based his psychology on the feeling
of community. It is a concept of many different meanings. Some people will
understand it, but not use all of it. They will only use some of it, while they neglect
other parts of it.
If people have social interest, it is most likely expected that they will feel a sense
of belonging to the human race. Because they feel connected to the human race, they
are able to relate to how other people feel. They can feel the comforts and discomforts
of life. The well-being of any person really depends on the well-being of everyone.
When this is at the behavioral level, thoughts and feelings can be put into actions
toward self development and the helpfulness towards others.
Adler believed that individuals can be connected with one another, with family,
