Clockwork Orange

Throughout the novel A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess expresses God’s saving grace as man’s ability of freewill. Burgess displays this by saying, “Goodness is something chosen. When a man cannot chose he ceases to be a man (p. 83).” As Alex proceeds through his torturous treatment, his ability to choose freely is taken away from him. By doing this, all goodness is taken away from Alex, and he is no longer able to receive God’s grace. The reader can interpret the novel as being Burgess’ personal struggle to find God’s saving grace.
