Education
For many years people have placed high value on education. "Education is the key to success." Though sometimes "what you don't know won't hurt you."
Things that "you don't know won't hurt you" relates to the Narrative Life of Frederick Douglas. W.E.B. Dubois' fictional character John in Souls of Black Folk reminds me of Frederick Douglas when he began to regret ever knowing how to read.
"I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me view of my wretched condition, without the remedy. It opened my eyes to horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out. In moments of agony, I envied my fellow slaves for their stupidity."
Now with the other slaves not knowing how to read did not hurt them but it did hurt Frederick Douglas. He wished he were a "beast" or the "meanest reptile" rather than himself and to think.
To be educated meant blacks being able to make money, buy land, build homes, and establish businesses. Blacks were able to prove themselves. This was Booker T. Washington's argument. He felt that blacks were "socially and intellectually inferior" because of our background. Blacks had to establish their identity by associating with the white-dominated educational institution, which was not beneficial to the welfare of black people. During slavery, the white man's burden was an educated black man. They would try their best to wipe out or kill every last one of those educated. This is similar to Mary (white man) attacking the cockroach (blacks) infestation in her house.
Dubois' "theory of double consciousness" provided insight into the life of African American that they are marked by a "two-ness," a double consciousness of being both American and black. Dubois provided a theory of culture that brought together the experience of slavery and fight for racial justice. In support of the idea that education is a burden that leaves African American...
