Their teachers, Debbie Bernacchi and Debby Roush, remind them as they enter fourth grade that in the intermediate grades, “We’re not learning to read, we’re reading to learn.” These fourth graders are certainly learning to appreciate a wide range of literature. Their fourth-grade reader includes historical fiction, biographies, realistic fiction, fantasy, fables, folktales, nonfiction in the areas of science and social studies, poetry, information about authors, and articles or stories about forms of art, including the performing arts.
