The character development in this section of the novel is based primarily on how their relationships with each other are developed. Offred developes a couple relationships in this section of the novel. She also gathers a lot of hope from what she finds out through this section. From the way that Moira escaped the Red Centre, Offred gained a lot of hope from this experience. She saw that it was no longer impossible to break out of there and even though it is nearly impossible to happen, that small chance gives her hope that the possiblity is still there. Offred develops a very good relationship with the Commander through their various night time encounters. Offred also displays a vicious side to her personality when she thinks about killing the Commander in the same way that Moira attacked the Aunt. Since she and the Commander are now friends, she (Offred) feels embarrased about the fact that they had sex during the ceremony. After the ceremony Offred begins to feel jealous that Serena Joy is the one who is married to the Commander, but at the same time she also feels guilty for being the Commander's mistress even though they aren't having sex. Through the change in diction between Offred and the Commander we see that Offred is becoming much more comfortable with him and their situation. She tends to talk to him now like their are equals and she uses laughter and sarcasism when talking with the Commander. Another relationship that Offred builds upon in this section is her relationship with Ofglen. They develope a trust for each other and now Offred has a friend whom she can talk to about anything.
