As previously mentioned, Phoenix Jackson shows how determined she is to travel down the path till she arrives the town. Her determination to reach the town for her grandson’s medicine is the very raison dętre for her to step into the worn path. With more careful observation however, her travel to the path seems to be impossible only by the stubborn will of delivering medicine for her grandson. ... Moreover, when she, slowly with plentiful rests, walks down the path, a black dog with a hunter unexpectedly jumps up on her and falls down her on the ground. ... As she recalls the dreadful memory of her slavery times, it gives a glimpse of the reasons why she is poor and disrespected from various people she meets along the path. ...
Many of obstacles and conflicts Phoenix Jackson encounters in Welty’s “Worn Path” come from her restless love she strongly bears in her mind for her grandson versus harsh circumstances she has to overcome.
