Two to tango The maintenance of national security is undoubtedly one of the most important policies for any government to pursue under all circumstances - that is to say, both in time of conflict with external forces and in time of peace. That is why all self-respecting nations try to safeguard national security in one way or another, including by the enactment of specific laws. Despite that fact, however, a campaign bas been underway in this country in recent months to scrap - or at least, revise part of - the National Security Law. Those who are in favor of the move argue that the much-abused law is no longer needed now that South and North Korea are working to be reconciled with each other by easing the military tension that has existed between them over the past half-century. When the North Korean regime, which had been the main threat to the security of the South, is now trying to be a friend, they claim, the National Security Law could be and should be abolished as it has outlived its useful life.
