-goals of network security are to maintain integrity, protect confidentiality and assure availability
-the major threat to the network is unauthorized access
-one on the first networks was called dumb terminal which meant a mainframe computer setup to many monitors using a user name and a password.
-security means-that users can perform only tasks that they are authorized to do, can obtain only information that they are authorized to have, cannot cause damage to the data, applications, or operating environment of a system.
SECURITY THREATS
-identity theft,privacy,wireless access
Integrity-refers to the assurance that data is not altered or destroyed in an unauthorized manner
Confidentiality-is the protection of data from unauthorized disclosure to a third party
Availability-is defined as the continuous operation of computing systems, and is the oposite of denial of service attack, which slow down or even crash systems by engulfing network equipment with useless noise.
when data confidentiality is compromised the consequences to the organization are not always immediate, but they are almost always costly
4 MAJOR CAUSES FOR SECURITY THREATS
-technology weaknesses-each network and computing technology has ingerent security problems
-configuration weakness-even the most secure technology can be misconfigured, exposingsecurity problems
-policy weakness-a poorly defined or improperly implemented and managed security policy can make the best security and network technology suscetpiable to security abuse.
