I’m still here aren’t I? I am still here aren’t I? The work gets done, doesn’t it? All managers and supervisors have to deal with insubordination from staff and co-workers during the course of their careers. The question is, how to handle conflict situations. “Conflict occurs when individuals or groups are not obtaining what they need or want and are seeking their own self interest (www.nsba.org).” Understanding conflict and conflict management styles is key to resolution. In every situation staff, management, and co-workers are responsible for their own actions. Conflict situations give management and staff an opportunity to choose a style of conflict resolution. Most people have a preferred style, but often conflict prevention and smoother resolution happens by choosing the most appropriate conflict style. Outlined are the definitions of conflict, the five conflict management styles, ideas for resolution, and what styles Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) uses in conflict resolution. Conflict develops within organizations because people are dealing with personal lives, jobs, children, pride, self-esteem, ego, and a sense of mission or purpose.
