Girl with a pearl

The voices that Griet hears in the opening section of the novel are that of a strange man and woman. These were refined voices which were very polished, unlike those used by her family which were not as 'well off' as those she heard. Coming from a poor family, she described the voices that she heard as being ones filled with rtich carpets and pearls, from the upper part of society. The voices are able to reveal the life that these people are leading, one with luxuries, order and privaledge. Catherina and Johannes, the two polished voices are the people seeking to employ Griet as a maid in their household.
