More than just a simple “story about friendship”, Garry Disher’s novel, The Divine Wind, paints a disturbing image of Australian life. ... However, whilst the characters are flawed and struggle with relationships, the love that Hart and Mitsy share, despite its imperfections, somewhat transcends the horrors each faces during the war.
Friendship is the basis upon which much of the good aspects of life are based, but in order to sustain friendships, each of the partners must be willing to compromise, for without some form of “giving in”, the friendship is doomed to suffer or be lost forever. Jamie and Hart’s friendship begins with Hart, “who made the first move… [for he] offered friendship” first, despite or maybe because they were “opposites.” The relationship continues even though Hart is jealous of Jamie’s good looks especially after the boating incident which left Hart with a “gammy leg.” Realizing that “we often make friends for the weakest of reasons,” Hart is unable to give Jamie up, even after he is concerned over his relationship with Mitsy.
