Oscar-Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840. ... However, this never stopped Monet from becoming the father of Impressionism. Monet’s life began with tragedy at the age of 5 his mother died where his aunt became his caretaker. Monet’s father suffered great disappointment and anger when his son denied the family business and began his career as an artist. Monet began drawing caricatures and by the age of 15 was selling each for 10 –20 francs. This was only a very small example of what was to become of Monet’s magnificent talent. Monet married Camille Doncieux and had two sons Jean-Pierre and Michel. During this time the Monet’s lived such poor lives they had to live with Alice Hoschedes and Ernest Hoschedes. Camille died at the age of 32 and left Monet in a depression so great he attempted to take his own life. ... Alice Hoschedes waited for a year for her husband to return; however, when he did not Monet stepped in and took her for his wife. Alice died in 1911 and this caused great distraught for Monet where he stated he would never paint again. In 1865, Monet’s paintings were exhibited in the Salon and by 1869; he was painting regularly in the company of Renoir. When Monet moved to Giverny, Normandy, he painted his now famous Flowers and Water Gardens. It was in these same gardens that Monet painted Water Lilies. Monet remained in Giverny for over 40 years.
