The way in which he wear’s the hat shows that Holden is not like the other “Phonies” in the book. ... The Carousel was important because it is Holden’s realization point. When he watched Phoebe on the carousel at the end of his story he finally realized that he was having some serious emotional problems and that he needed help and also there was nothing he could do to control destiny. The red hunting hat was very important to Holden. The hat symbolized Holden’s desire to be different from everyone else. The hat is used as a form of protection for Holden. A hunting hat is used for protection while out hunting and for Holden as he is out hunting for companionship it is protecting him from all of the phonies.
