The Great Gatsby is a highly symbolic meditation on 1920s America as a whole, in particular the disintegration of the American dream in an era of unprecedented
Prosperity and material excess.
The great parties that Gatsby throws every Saturday night is one of the symbols that I could find interesting, this parties were the resulted ultimately in the corruption of the American dream, as the unrestrained desire for money and pleasure surpassed more noble goals. Nick and Gatsby two characters symbolic in the story, both of whom fought World War I, and exhibit the new found cosmopolitanism and cynicism that resulted from the war.
