In many modern day relationships between a man and a woman there is usually a controlling figure that is dominant over the other. ... In the play, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, the image of marriage between Stanley and Stella; Steve and Eunice; Allan and Blanche; and Blanche and Mitch display one dominant figure over the other. ... Tennessee Williams does present an argument about marriage in my opinion trying to convey that “Desire” should not be the only basis of a marriage. ... The passion and desire between the two also was the basis of the marriage. ... Once again, the Desire of the relationship causes temporary happiness and brings the couple back together. ... I agree with one critic that states:
Williams expresses… his development of the violent and frequently physical abusive relationships… inspite the fact that he perceives the horror for women in these relationships, Williams comes out in favor of them; they are, he sells us at the end of Streetcar, life giving, fueled by desire, whereas Blanche’s way represents a surrender to death. ... But desire is the factor that kept all the relationships together in all cases except for Blanche’s.
