Discrimination occurs when you treat someone differently on the basis of some characteristic, such as race, gender, hair colour, height and so on. Although some forms of discrimination are perfectly legal, many forms are not. Discrimination in the workplace has been going on for decades, discrimination agaist people for such things as: -Race -Religion -Disability -Pregnancy -Marital Status -Age People who discriminate others for any of the above reasons are comminting an illegal act and can therefore be prosecuted by government law. Three of the most encoutered discriminations within the workplace are Disability Dicrimination, Racial Discrimination & Sex Discrimination. ... A and Australian govenments placed legislation acts upon these 3 categories of Discrimination. ... The very first legislation act occured in 1975, when the Racial Discrimination act was brought into force. Workplace Discrimination in the Past Back before laws and regulations on workplace discrimination were introduced by the govenment, there wasnt really anything an emplyee could do about any situation that came to hand. ... The reason forr this being is because there were no laws, regulations or acts that were put upon any type of discrimination in the workplace. ... In the early days the worst form of discrimination that went on was the discrimination upon women and indigionous men and women, where employers refused to hire these workers simply because of their gender or race, not because of their abilities or work ethics. ... For the individual worker this means alot of stress off their backs, not having to worry about being put down for a job, or being harrassed within the workplace. ... The Acts that have been implamented within each state have had a major positive effect on the workplace and are explained in more detail below: The Law And The Commission Explained The original Human Rights Commission was established in 1981 under the Human Rights Commission Act.The Commission was based in Canberra and was empowered to handle complaints, review legislation and conduct educational, promotional and research programs in relation to the Racial Discrimination Act 1975. In 1984 the Sex Discrimination Act was passed. The Act makes discrimination on the grounds of sex, marital status, pregnancy and family responsibilities unlawful in a range of areas of public life such as employment, accommodation and the provision of goods and services.
