The Sea full of Hooks

When a trout gets hooked on a line, it’s struggle to survive begins. The human struggles in the same way with societal influence and other agonies experienced in life. Sometimes he can overcome these obstacles; sometimes he loses the battle and drowns in a sea of troubles. In the book The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the hooked fish (Danny)must escape the strong grip of societal factors- religious preference and tradition- to develop his character and continue on the journey of finding himself apart from society’s expectations. Danny Saunders was a Hasid. His dad was a rabbi who wanted Danny shut out from the modern world. Thus bias, anger and hatred were made known by Danny against the conservative Jewish kids during the baseball game. He played on a devoutly Jewish baseball team, where everyone had sidecurls and wore traditional Jewish raiment. His orthodox teammates would be enough to pressure Danny into thinking and acting a certain way towards the more Americanized Jews who were wearing street clothes and skull caps. Reuven described the garments of the Orthodox Jews as, “In the fashion of the very Orthodox, their hair was closely cropped, except for the area near their ears from which mushroomed the untouched hair that tumbled down into the long side curls...
