She is prejudice and spreads her fears and feelings to her son and his family. ... The author provides suspense by the actions of the characters, things keep getting steadily worse but one doesn’t expect the surprise that comes at the end. ... It also provides a lesson about not becoming so consumed with fears that you overlook the most important things. The overall theme of this story could be stated as, “People sometimes let their fears get the best of them and they focus on their fears, but in focusing on their fears, they are missing what is really important.
