John Donne’s poetry reflects the width of his experiences in life. There is a great variety in Donne’s poetry. Donne’s poetry can be broken down into two categories. The first category is Donne’s secular love poems, which are often referred to as the ‘songs and sonnets’. ... The second category is Donne’s religious poetry also known as his holy sonnets. In these poems Donne seems to replace the intensity of his feelings towards women, to that towards God. ... In John Donne’s poetry there is a dramatic quality which is reinforced by the use of personal pro-nouns, particularly the use of ‘I’, and a conversational tone is used which gives the impression that Donne has a personal involvement in the issues of the poem. The majority of Donne’s poems begin with a dramatic outcry but moderate as the poem progresses. One of the most famous poems that Donne has written in his lifetime is “The Sunne Rising”.
