The jumpshot: A Kinetic Analysis
Introduction: • developed in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith • When the game of basketball was new, two hands were used for shooting. Some years later, players discovered that they could hit the basket with a one-hand push shot (jump shot) and could get the shot off faster and higher than by using the two hand shot (Hess, p.30). • The jump shot is distinguished as the most important of all the shooting actions (Hess 1980), and in the Spanish Basketball League it is the one most often used successfully, since 41% of all points are scored by using this technique (Rojas, p.1651). • Common errors among jump shooters are: shooting with the palm rather than the fingers; incorrect hand position on the ball; shooting from outside the individual scoring range; incorrect follow-through; and jumping incorrectly (Hess, p.32).
