My Worst Job

During the summer of 1989, on break from school, I answered a want ad in person and was immediately hired at Shipley's donuts. On my first day, I reported for duty at 3 a.m. and was elbow deep in maple syrup mix by ten after. I'd washed my hands, but not my elbows. As I spread the warm maple over freshly baked doughnuts, I kept thinking , "these are dirty elbow donuts." From three to six, the owner, the head baker and two of us assitants cooked and glazed dozens of assorted doughnuts.
