Violence in the Media In today’s society, murder rape, suicide, fights riots, shootings, and other gratuitous depictions of violence are no further away than the nearest television or newspaper. ... While most people do not see a cause for concern over the media, many scientists agree that the proliferation of violence can have a lasting effect on people. While studies have not convincingly shown a causal relationship between violent behavior and observing it through the media, a correlation has been established. Because of the perceived consequences created by violence in the media, public policy makers have stepped in to determine if regulatory mandates must be set. Does media violence play a role in our lives, and do government regulators have a right to affect what we see? People have two opposing views about media violence. In the first instance many people say they are desensitized to it because media violence is so prevalent. Because they see and hear so much violence, they believe they are becoming immune, even more so than the former generation.
