Living in Sin

Sin in Which We Live “Living in Sin” by Adrienne Rich was written in 1955 but is still prevalent today. Many people today still believe in the perfect relationship that involves no work. Even people believe this such thing exists, it rarely does. In the poem “Living in Sin,” Rich uses tone, imagery, and symbolism to illustrate a couple’s dying relationship. Rich’s tone throughout the poem one of disappointment and then changes at the end to hope. In the beginning of the poem Rich uses a disappointing tone in describing their relationship. Rich says “She had thought the studio would keep itself” (line 1). This shows how the woman thought their relationship would stay strong without any work from her or the man.
