Heroism of Achilles
The question at hand is whether or not Achilles could be considered a hero. The following paragraphs contain the different points of Achilles thoughts, actions, and life in view of Campbell’s Hero/Myth structure. My idea of heroism will be presented as well, and from that standpoint, Achilles will be rated on his place in history as a hero long ago. Born of the mortal Peleus, and the goddess Thetis, Achilles had the strength and endurance of the immortals, yet the death weakness of mortal beings. ... Achilles willingly agreed to bring his troops to help the men of Greek. ... Odysseus has at this point called Achilles to go across the sea and fight in a war. Achilles answers this call with the least hesitation, whereupon he enters a completely new world, the world of the Trojans. ... In the Iliad, Patroclus is Achilles closest and dearest friend, one that offers advice and comfort through hard times. Achilles has one large obstacle in his way of becoming a hero – rage. Though his rage and the wrath it can bring upon his enemies is known far and wide, it is at this point, inhibiting Achilles decision to help his fellow countrymen. ... Once Achilles has overcome his rage at Agamemnon for taking his prize, he continues on the path of becoming a hero.
