Universities Have Concentrated For Far Too Long On Independent Learning And Have Neglected The Value Of

The following essay is going to discuss the above statement. Throughout this piece of work I will be discussing group work and independent learning as the main subject areas. I will look into the true meanings of them both and discuss and offer arguments to both the advantages and the disadvantages of these subjects.
To begin with I am going to look at ‘group learning'.
The one fundamental purpose of group work learning is to work with the other members of the group in competing a task and/or to help with individuals complete their own personal assignment.
‘Each group operates as a team and team mates are responsible for their own learning as well that of their team mates…everyone has a task and is actively involved…students must feel that they need each other in order to carry out the group task.' ( Mikel 1993)
The above quote should be a base to which every group activity works from. It clearly states the unwritten rules of group learning. In order to be effective, groups must follow this general but well stated quote.
There are however many factors that influence the way a group works together, these can be positive and they can also be negative. The people who work in the group and the settings and atmosphere to which they are working under are major factors. One reason why universities may have neglected group learning has maybe so0mething to do with the relaxed atmosphere at university. A relaxed atmosphere can cause the group to be easily led into talking about irrelevant things. Although on the flip side of that argument, a relaxed atmosphere can also help the group work harder together.
Group behaviour is another major area, although can be linked to the people. The members in a group must all a make personal commitment to the team in order to help each other. This can be done by assigning each member his/her own personal role within the group, for example, a group spokesperson, a head note taker or, if the...
