Fair Is Foul And Foul Is Fair

Three witches-- add to that thunder, a gloomy atmosphere, and a cauldron of weird mixture—what do you get? A powerful and mysterious scene. This is what Macbeth is all about: an inexplicable twisted plot.

First of all, what do the words ‘fair' and ‘foul' mean? Obviously, ‘fair' is ‘good' and ‘foul' is ‘bad'. What is ‘good' and ‘bad' in this play? This can be tackled into two angles: one, things aren't what they seem; and two, that what is good at first becomes bad and vice-versa.

On the first angle, we can say that deception is a key player. The line, having been said by the witches, relate to us that something evil is about to happen. Witches have always been associated to the devil, if not, to foul play. In here, the witches actually give us a hint of what is to come. What is to come?

Macbeth (and his character) is revealed to us by this single line. How? Macbeth first appears to us as a good person—he was victorious in a battle in Norway and was even given the title Thane of Cawdor. Righteous and noble, isn't he? This ‘righteousness' and ‘nobleness', however, did not stay constant throughout the whole play. In the end, what we actually saw was a man who thought of nothing else but himself! He betrayed a close friend by not telling him of his plans and by actually killing him. He murdered a just person worthy enough to be called king and rule a kingdom. He murdered a whole family. He became an overconfident man who thought he can conquer the whole world with his so-called authority and power. On how his character changed will be tackled later on.

On Lady Macbeth's part, she is a woman. A lot of terms can be associated to this word: soft, subtle, kind, honest, and truthful are just some of them. Once again, we have been deceived. Yes, she may be a woman, but not just any other woman. In fact, she helped in building-up the final character of her husband. We can see that she, herself, had...
