Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte was one of the greatest military commanders and risk takers of all time.
Napoleon was born in 1769 to Carlo and Marie-Letizia Bonaparte. Carlo was a lawyer and a political opportunist. The Bonaparte's were a healthy family from Corsican nobility. A combination of Carlo's social climbing; Letizia's adultery with the French military governor and Napoleon's own ability enabled him to enter the military academy at Brienne. He graduated a year later a second lieutenant in the Artillery.
The French Revolution had virtually destroyed the republic's officer class and favored individuals who could achieve swift promotion. In December, 1793 Napoleon was the hero of Toulon and a General. Shortly afterward, Napoleon was arrested for treason. Political flexibility saved him from certain death.

Napoleon became a hero again in 1795 defending the government from angry counter-revolutionary forces. Bara's rewarded Napoleon by giving him the highest military office, Command of the Army of Italy.
Napoleon's fame, ambitions and character was based on conquest. For the next eight years Napoleon dominated Europe, fighting and defeating a range of alliances. There were also mistakes and setbacks. Spain was one of Napoleon's biggest problems. They refused to accept Joseph (Napoleons brother) as ruler.
Bored and very aware of the continued fighting in France, Napoleon made a return to power in 1815. He was defeated in one of histories greatest battles, the Waterloo. The British forced him in to exile shortly afterward. Napoleon died six years later at the age of 51.
Napoleon may not have been a general of utter genius, but he was very good. He may not have been the best politician of his age, but he was often superb.
