While the results show that breast-fed babies have higher cognitive scores than formula fed babies, some people have concluded that this is because of confounding factors like the age of the mother or socioeconomic status. The first report I will analyze is called ˇ§Breast feeding and cognitive development at age1 and 5 yearsˇ¨ (2001), written by Angelsen, Vik, Jacobsen and Bakketeig. These researchers wanted to know if the duration of breast feeding made a difference to cognitive and motor development on a homogenous population that had excellent environments, in a culture where most mother breast fed. ... The first was that there would be no difference in cognitive for children who had been breastfed for less than three months compared to children who were breast-fed for more than six months at 13 months and 5 years. ... The rationale behind this study was to compare breast fed babies with each other, instead of with formula fed babies, and as much as required, to remove confounding factors like the difference in socioeconomic status. ... The subjects were questioned by public health nurses on breast feeding at 1 1/2, 3, 6, 9 and 13 months of age. ... After 13 months, the mothers had another questionnaire, but on this one they were asked to give a yes or no answer in response to whether they had breast fed at 3, 6, 9, and 13 months (Angelsen et al 2001). ... The motor development had no great difference, but ˇ§there was a trend towards increasing scores with increasing duration of breast feedingˇ¨ (Angelsen et al 2001).
