john howard

This paper will discuss in brief the life of John Howard, and how the prison reformer began the crusade of seeking that all prisons have some form of humanity and sanitation for all prisoners. This paper will then discuss the John Howard Society of New Brunswick, including their start, philosophy, and their history.
John Howard was born on September 2, 1726 at Stoke Newington, London from a middle class family. His mother died shortly after his birth and his father died when Howard was sixteen. Howard grew up at a boarding school in Hertford. During Howard’s travels around the world in 1756 the French captured a ship that he was on. Upon spending a period of six days in a French prison, Howard was shocked by the condition of the dungeon, prison, in which he was imprisoned.
In February of 1773, after the death of his wife in 1965, from giving birth to their first child, and having what he considered to be a religious experience in 1770 in Naples, Howard became High Sheriff of Bedford; he accepted the position as a way to serve God. ... Howard quickly decided upon changes as an attempt to help the system to decrease in the suffering that the prisoners were dealing with in their room, and conditions of the board.
