Narrative Style in The Handmaid s Tale Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
Margaret Atwood’s novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, is a speculative look at a future where the government has become completely authoritarian and controls even the reproductive processes of women. Do Android’s Dream of Electric Sheep?, by Phil Dick, is a science fiction novel that deals with the conflicts between humans and androids in the future post-apocalyptic world. ... The reader discovers Dick’s world through the eyes of an omniscient observer. The investigation of world of the Handmaid’s is told through the perspective of Offred, one of Handmaids. Though they have similar thematic elements, Do Android’s Dream of Electric Sheep? and The Handmaid’s Tale use different narrative techniques to convey different meanings and ideas. Dick’s novel follows through journey of the bounty hunter, Rick Deckard, on the trail of a group of renegade androids that have managed to return to Earth illegally. Deckard’s job is to terminate these androids. The reader watches the action from a distance; the narrative presents the characters and their surroundings, without revealing the thoughts of Deckard.
