The Jade Peony
The Jade Peony is made up of three parts.Instead of a traditional novel format, Choy has chosen to break his novel into three parts, each part relating the story of three siblings.Set in Vancouver's Chinatown in the late 1930's and 40's, it tells the story through vivid and intense reminiscences of the three younger children of an immigrant family. Each one experiences a very different childhhod, depending on the age and sex, as they encounter the complexities of birth and death, love and hate, kinship and otherness.
