Canadian Survival
Survival is a very common word that is heard in Canadian literature. Canadian authors and poets seem to like to write about survival. There are different kinds of survival, there is physical, emotional, cultural, spiritual, and psychological. Survival is a means of copping. Everyday you have to deal with issues that contain the theme of survival. Most stories that have been written by Canadian writers have the topic of survival. Physical survival stands out in “Walk Well My Brother” because Charles Lavery who knows nothing about survival in nature almost freezes to death. ... In the poem “Great Aunt Rebecca” there is some sense of physical survival because Aunt Rebecca made cloths for her nine children and hunted to provide food for them. The short story “The Loons” has physical survival because a native named Piquette is surviving physical abuse from her husband. ... The short story “Walk Well My Brother” can have emotional survival because Charles Lavery had to learn how to cope with that kind of cold weather. ... “To Set Our House In Order” has emotional survival. ... Emotional survival is in the poem “Woodtick” because the mother and daughter had to survive knowing that the were considered outcasts and Canadians didn’t want them to live here.
