Thomas Hardys short stories contain a good deal of sadness Which characters do you feel sympathy
In the Thomas Hardys short stories that we have read, all contain a good deal od sadness. The stories are about love and relationships between people that end up in a tragic situation that cant be controlled. This makes it hard for us n;t to feel sympathy towards certain characters in the stories. The characters that i have chosen to sympathyse with are from the stories, The Withered Arm, and The Sons Veto. Both characters that i have chosen, i feel sympathy for. ... Both of the women, Gertrude Lodge and Sophy Twycott are good people, it is simply the situation that they are in that they cannot control. Hardy sets both of teh characters up at the start of the story so that at the end thier fall will be greater. In the Withered Arm i feel a strong sense of sympathy for Gertrude, she is the new younf wife of farmer Lodge. ... I feel sympathy for Gertrude because by the end of the story, she isnt seen as being so beautiful because of her withered arm. ... I feel sympathy for her during the story because her marriage to Mr Lodge gradually turned his back on Gertrude because of her withered arm. ... Gertrude is timid, she is in trouble, distress, and for this we feel sorry for her. ... Although, we could argue that Rhoda merits our sympathy because Rhoda feels a sense of guilt, which inplies a change in her attitude, from being jealous to feeling guilty, This innocent young thing should have her blessing and not her curse.
