Sick Rose
One of the poems that I liked the most of William Blake is The Sick Rose. This poem symbolizes how one small thing such as a worm came in and made its house in this thing and destroys the beautiful rose. A lot can be interpreted from this poem even though it is only a few lines. It has a great appeal and still talks about how life can be sometimes. I find it interesting that throughout this poem it tells me that is only as if one thing can come inside.
That worm that landed in the rose and made its home there made the rose ugly. It is like a guy moving in with his girlfriend and him abusing her. Little by little he is destroying her self-esteem by hitting her. She is no longer feeling beautiful because he is there to put her down. He may love her but he shows his love by hitting her and maybe he does not know.
That beautiful rose symbolizes the girl that gets abused by his boyfriend. She loves him so much that she thinks he does that because he loves her. She does not want to go out with her friends or talk to any one because her boyfriend does not let her. She is not the beautiful rose she used to be. She has changed her appearance and her feelings because of the impact her boyfriend is having on her.
Another thing that can be interpreted is how something so beautiful can become ugly just by one thing. A female dog is not wanted as much as a male dog because it may be pretty when its young but ones it gets old enough and it reproduces it gets ugly. Female dogs are not worth a lot and most people do not want them. Maybe because they are very cute when you buy them but once they have puppies they get ugly. They are not the same no more and people leave them in the back yard so they cannot be seen. Their hair gets ugly and they stop being pretty from the outside.
