John Smith was not far off in his statement of “here every man may be master and owner of his own labor and land, or the greatest part, in a small time. ... The opportunities in the colonies of New England for masters such as carpenters, masons, fishermen, and other various artisans were numerous according to Smith’s Description of New England. ... Freedom and opportunity although possible to obtain, came not as easily as he had suggested it to be in his description.
