Sex Education and Adolescent Pregnancy
In order to address the problems of teen pregnancy, there have been many attempts to educate young adolescents and emerging adults about sex. The sex education approach over the last 40 years have been questionable as well as controversial. Three schools of thought have emerged as the front runners of this controversy and these are: abstinence only program, abstinence-plus program and a comprehensive sexuality education program. It is important to understand that any sexual education approach will inevitably be controversial. According to the article “ Is abstinence Education the Best Sex Education” by Thomas Lickona, abstinence is the only way to address the issue of adolescent pregnancy and sexual transmitted diseases (std’s). This theory encourages the refraining of having sex until one is emotionally ready to have a monogamous relationship.
