Politics In Music

Ever since the 1960’s, when The Beatles formed the basis of the modern pop group, and George Harrison penned the lyrics to ‘Taxman’, music and politics have gone hand in hand. For the last 5 decades artists across all genres have expressed their political and social views through their music, either through their lyrics or the style of music which they play. Before the 60’s, when pioneers of politics in music, like Bob Dylan and to an extent Jimi Hendrix, were launching their careers, music was solely for entertainment. ... Big band and dancehall jazz were the popular music of the era and people listened to this music to forget the troubles of war, rather than to remind themselves of them, so the lyrics were of almost purely emotional content with no particularly deep meaning.
