Australian artists have embraced the new practices
Australian artists have embraced the new practices. Artists such as Max Dupain and Imants Tiller have been amongst the many artists to do so. No longer do traditional art practices dominate in the art world. New ideas and new art practices are constantly being formed. ... Early in his career Tiller was exposed to the dominant art form at that time; conceptual art, so new practices and ideas are not unknown to him and have highly influenced his work. Appropriation from other artists works is a practice Imants Tiller is highly fond of using. Many people against the "new practices" see his appropriation of other artists work as stealing but he sees it as a translation of the works. He takes pieces of other artists works, completely disregards the original meaning and with creative intervention translates the image into a new concept. He alters the meaning of another artists work by placing it in a different context. ... His work is characterized by his practice of drawing a grid over a reproduction of another artists work. He combines images from different artists work to emphasise that we live in an age of mechanical reproduction where everything is mediated and the idea of originality is redundant. ... He starts off with other artists work then along the way adds his own emphasis and incorporates his own style. ... He has spent his lifetime creating a unique photographic history of Australia, with his black and images portraying Australian life. Dupains photographs of mundane subjects such as street lamps, wharves and buildings were criticised by many as they were considered "boring" but in actual fact they reflected the changing face of Australian society and illustrated his intense personal style and mastery of technique eg) Silos through Windscreen, 1935 Dupain experimented with solarisation (deliberate over exposure) when he became acquainted with Man Ray and other European modernists and this experimentation or as he called it " mucking around" inspired Dupain to try other techniques and he soon produced his own rayographs, solarisations, bas-reliefs, negative prints and photomontages. ... The main ideas for Storriers paintings come from the Australian horizon, and his love of creating a painting that exhibits the beauty of distance and space.
