Edward Hopper
Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York just outside Manhattan on July 22, 1882. ... He worked under Robert Henri, a man who Hopper later described as the “most influential artist” he ever had. ... Like the majority of young American artists at the time, Edward longed to study in France. ... In 1913, Hopper sold his very first painting at the Armory Show in New York. In 1920 he had his first solo exhibition at the Whitney Studio Club, but none of his paintings were sold and Hopper began to doubt his success of becoming a well-known artist. ...
