What does it mean to be human? The analysis of every inhuman act begins with this question. Love is the most noble of all human qualities. By the same token, hate is the worst of human reactions. There are many man-made issues that fuel the fire of hatred. Prejudice is one of the horrors of everyday life in every society that results in inhuman acts of hatred. Hate can take the form of racism, narrow mindedness, intolerance or bigotry. Whatever word one uses for it, it is wrong and it is inhuman.
From the beginning of time, hatred and prejudice have been part of the human society. We have read about it in the early 1900?s in Harper Lee?s To Kill a Mockingbird. We have seen it flash in front of our eyes on and after September 11th, 2001. Especially after this date, terrorism has been equated with Islam-a faith that has peace at its core. Innocent Muslims in the shadow of violent terrorists were misunderstood, hated and discriminated against. In the hearts of some, hatred grew, and humanity along with innocent lives crumbled.
Everyday and age has its Mockingbirds and its Blue Jays. The loud aggressive bullies of the bird world, the Blue Jays see evil in every difference and react with intolerance. In the book, the innocent Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are mockingbirds. Within their limitations they live life trying to do the best for themselves and others. They sing their hearts out and touch the lives of others around them. Boo Radley, silently, discreetly and compassionately saves the frightened children from the menacing Bob Ewell. The compassion of these mockingbirds touches the hearts of Scout and Jem and plants the seed of perception in their hearts. Scout grows and matures and tastes the fruits of understanding others and excepting their differences and shortcomings.
