Critically examine the claims of Philadelphia being of “world city” status The definition of a “world City” was once a place where the world’s work is done, however today there are many detailed definitions of a “world city” Friedman (1986) suggests that there are seven indicators that make a city a “world city”. ... At the beginning of the 18th century, Philadelphia was known as the ‘Workshop of America’, as Birmingham was in the UK. ... However, today the manufacturing industrial sector in Philadelphia is in decline and new high-tech industries, such as medical technology and electrical components, are emerging. ... Philadelphia has the highest percentage of physicians involved in research and has the second largest concentration of health care resources in the USA. ... As Friedman (1986) suggests, “world city’s” are, “Major financial centers, headquarters for Trans National Companies are situated there, important manufacturing centers with rapid growth of the business services sector”. Philadelphia seems to possess all of these indicators, making it a probable candidate for “world city” status, Sassen (1991) believes that “world city’s” are, “Highly concentrated command points in the organization of the worlds economy and key locations for finance and specialized service firms”.
