Aids On June 5, 1981, an obscure medical journal reported a mysterious illness that had killed five young gay men in Los Angeles. It was the first mention of what later became known as AIDS. ... The fact that these two groups were already routinely portrayed as ‘deviant’ minorities encouraged in many the impulse to invest AIDS with the supernatural power to ‘seek out’ stigmatized and marginalized groups (Baylies 25). ... In the United States, the alarming spread of AIDS within the African-American community has been concentrated within the inner cities, targeting the poor and the addicted. ... While high-risk behavior in these communities directly spreads HIV/AIDS, urban poverty is clearly a contributing cause. And as AIDS moves through these communities, they become still poorer and more marginalized. Now that it’s the year 2003, the media has covered AIDS in a more fashionable way. The media has had more coverage on AIDS in the last decade. In an article by Kai Wright she states that nationally, AIDS is the number one cause of deaths in African Americans between the ages of 25 and 44.
