Reconstruction, the period following the Civil War, is one the most controversial eras in American history. There is much dispute over whether it was a complete success or utter failure, because it is not clear what were the real goals and intentions behind implanting the Reconstruction period. There are four major problems that needed to be solved in order for Reconstruction to be successful. The most apparent and objective aim of the Reconstruction was to reunite the southern Confederate states back with the Union and the federal government. The Reconstruction made long lasting alterations to America’s political life. ... Reconstruction was successful in uniting the states, but without any real change to blacks lifestyle for the time being. ... Reconstruction did, nevertheless open the door to further equality movements such as the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement. ... “Both President Lincoln and Johnson favored a lenient approach to reconstruction” , not even requiring the newly entered states to ratify 14th amendment without the intervention of Congress. ... Before Reconstruction, blacks and white southerners were poorly educated; farming was basically the only essential thing they needed to be educated in. ... The failure of the Reconstruction lies in the fact that blacks were given liberty in name only for them most part. ... This was exactly the opposite of the goals for Reconstruction, blacks wanted to be free from the life of forced labor and unjust laws. ... When the Redemption period of the Reconstruction occurred, almost all the progress made for blacks was completely reversed. Like many benefits and rights give to blacks during the Reconstruction, they soon disappeared. ... Towards the end of the Reconstruction era, most grew tired of the ideas behind it, feeling there was no progress and eventually gave in.
