Canals and railroads were the main progressions in transportation that helped the growth of trade by opening up new markets. The magnetic telegraph and the steam cylinder rotary press changed communications for the better: they made communication much quicker and easier. These improvements were primary examples of how the American economy became more prosperous in this 20 year period because they linked the states together. Through communication and transportation there was much more interaction and trade between the different areas of the country. Improvements in transportation of the United States helped the American economy by making it easier for the people to travel throughout the country. ... Railroads were very short at first but during this period, there were many important advances that helped the railroads prevail over other modes of transportation.
