... The basic and most obvious way in which Thoreau’s writings were a practical application of Emerson’s theory, is in Walden. Through Walden we see the actual transcendental lifestyle being played out on various levels. Thoreau takes many aspects of Emerson’s grasp on transcendentalism and instead of preaching them tries to see what the daily application for these ideas are. Also, not only does Thoreau take the physical aspect of Emerson into play, but he also mainly concentrates on the mental aspects one must acquire so that you can fully understand what it means to truly be a transcendentalist.
